The
7 Seven Deadly Sins
The seven deadly sins, also known as
the cardinal sins,
are a classification of the most objectionable vices
that have been used since early
Christian times to educate followers concerning fallen
man’s tendency to sin.
They are lust, greed, gluttony, wrath, sloth,
envy and pride.
The Catholic Church divided sin into two principal
categories:
1.Venial
These are relatively minor, and can be forgiven
through any sacraments of the church,
2. Capital
These are more severe “capital’ or mortal
sin.
Mortal sins destroyed the life of grace & created
the threat of eternal damnation
unless either absolved through the sacrament of
confession,
or forgiven through perfect contrition on the part of
the penitent.
LUST
Lust (Latin, Cupidita), or lechery, is usually
thought of as excessive cravings or desires of the body
of a sexual nature.
It could lead to sexual compulsions and transgressions
including sexual addiction, adultery, fornication,
perversion, bestiality,
rape, and incest.
The punishment in Hell will be: You
will be smothered in fire & brimstone.
Associated symbols: Lust is linked
with the cow & the colour blue.
GLUTTONY
Gluttony (Latin, gula) is the over-indulgence &
over-consumption of anything to the point of waste.
In the Christian religions, it is considered a sin
because of the excessive desire for food, or its
withholding from the poor.
The punishment in Hell will be: You
will be force-fed rats, toads, and snakes.
Associated symbols: Gluttony is
linked with the pig & the color orange.
GREED
Greed (Latin, avaritia) is also known as covetousness
is like lust & gluttony, a sin of excess.
It is the desire for material wealth, ignoring the realm
of the spiritual.
The punishment in Hell will be: You
will be boiled alive in the finest oil.
Associated symbols: Greed is linked
with the frog & the colour yellow.
SLOTH
Sloth is the failure to utilize your talents and
gifts for physical or spiritual work.
The modern view goes further, regarding laziness and
indifference as the sin at the heart of the matter.
The punishment in Hell will be:
You will be thrown into snake pits.
Associated symbols: Sloth is linked
with the goat & the colour light blue.
WRATH
Wrath (Latin, ira), also known as anger or
“rage”, is uncontrolled feelings of hatred.
Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love
and opts instead for fury.
The punishment in Hell will be: You
will be dismembered alive.
Associated symbols: Anger is linked
with the bear & the colour red.
ENVY
Envy (Latin, invidia), like greed, may be
characterized by an insatiable desire;
However, they differ for two main reasons.
First, greed is largely associated with material goods,
whereas envy may apply more generally.
Second, those who commit the sin of envy resent that
someone has something they perceive themselves as
lacking,
and wish that other person to be deprived of it.
The punishment in Hell will be: You
will be put in freezing water.
Associated symbols: Envy is linked
with the dog & the colour green.
PRIDE
Pride (Latin, superbia), or hubris, is excessive
belief in one’s own abilities,
that interferes with the individual’s recognition of
the grace of God.
It is identified as a desire to be more important or
attractive than others,
failing to acknowledge the good work of others, and
excessive love of self.
Pride is the original & most serious of the seven
deadly sins,
and indeed the ultimate source from which all the others
arise.
Pride is also known as Vanity.
The punishment in Hell will be: You
will be broken on the wheel.
Associated symbols: Pride is linked
with the horse & the colour violet
