What are They?
|In the New Testament, Jesus explains that miracles are performed by faith in God.
"If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain,
move from here to there and it will move" [Matthew 17:20].
A Miracle is an extraordinary event in our physical world that surpasses all known human
or natural powers & is considered to be supernatural in origin or an act of God.
Several real life miracles, divine intervention, coincidence, fate, "signs of God" or
"beating the odds" prove that nothing is impossible through God.
"Do not think the IMPOSSIBLE,
Think I'M POSSIBLE"
In everyday usage, "miracle" might also refer to any statistically unlikely good event,
such as the birth of a baby, surviving a plane crash, surviving a terminal sickness,
or just 'beating the odds'. In Saint John's Gospel the miracles are called "signs"
and the emphasis is on God demonstrating His underlying normal work in remarkable ways.
Fear says, "I will believe it when I see it".
Faith says, Believe it and you will see it"
Faith comes when you follow your spirit, the part that feeds on God's word.
Miracles of Jesus:
Jesus raised the dead, turned water into wine [John 2:1-11], and fed a multitude by
turning a loaf of bread into several loaves of bread.
Jesus rose from the dead himself, God His father having raised him.
After Jesus returned to heaven, His disciples prayed to God to grant that miracles be done in His name,
for the purpose of convincing people that He is still alive. [Acts 4:29-31].
"Great crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled,
the mute & many others, and laid them at His feet; and He healed them." [Matthew 15:30]
Jesus raised Jairus' daughter [Mark 5:22-24,35-43; Matthew 9:18-19,23-26; Luke 8:41,42,49-56];
He healed a blind and mute demonic [Luke 11:14 & Matthew 12:22];
He healed the nobleman's son at Cana [John 4:46-54];
He healed Peter's mother-in-law [Mark 1:29-31; Matthew 8:14-15; Luke 4:38-39];
He healed the lame man at the pool of Bethesda [John 5:1-9];
He cleansed the leper [Mark 1:40-45; Matthew 8:2-4; Luke 5:12-16];
He healed the woman with an issue of blood [Mark 5:25-34; Matthew 9:20-22; Luke 8:43-48];
He healed a centurion's servant [Luke 7:1-10 & Matthew 8:5-13];
and He restored Malchus's ear [Luke 22:49-51 & John 18:10].
Other verses warn us of many false prophets who will want to perform miracles to deceive
"even the elect of Christ" [Matthew 24:24, 2 Thes 2:9, Revelation 13:13].
The Catholic Church recognizes miracles as being God's works,
either directly or through the prayers + intercession of a specific Saint.
Normally there is a specific purpose connected to a miracle,
For example, the conversion of a person to the Catholic faith or making a church desired by God.
The Church is very cautious to approve the validity of putative miracles.
It upholds particularly strict requirements in validating the miracle's authenticity.
This process is overseen by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
The Catholic Church claims to have confirmed the validity of many of the miracles,
many of these happening in modern times & having withstood the test of modern scientific scrutiny.
Some of the more notable miracles approved by the Church are the Eucharistic miracles wherein the
Sacred Host is transformed visibly into Christ's living Flesh & Blood, bleeds, hovers in the air,
radiates light & displays the image of Jesus. The first example of the Host being visibly changed
into human flesh & blood happened at Lanciano in Italy approximately 700 A.D. Unlike other miracles
of a more transient nature, the Flesh & Blood remain in Lanciano to today, having been scientifically
examined as recently as 1972. According to 17th.century documents, a young Spanish man's foot was
miraculously restored to him in 1640 after having it being amputated two years earlier.
Another miracle validated by the Church is the Miracle of the Sun, which happened near Fma in Portugal
on October 13th in 1917. Around 70,000 to 100,000 individuals, who were gathered at a cove near Fma,
saw the sun dim, change colours, spun around, moved up in the sky, and appear to plummet to the earth, radiating
tremendous heat at the same time. Ten minutes later the ground and everyone's clothes, which had gotten wet by an
earlier rainstorm, were now dry. There are so much first-hand reports of the details from both religious and
People brought all their sick to him and begged him
to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak,
and all who touched him were healed
- Matthew 14:3536.
